Upgrading Windows
When it comes to software upgrades, it often feels like a double-edged sword. On one hand, you’ve got new features and improved security that can make your life easier; on the other hand, there’s the headache of learning the changes and the possibility of bugs popping up. So, do you really have to upgrade?

Well, it largely depends on your needs and how comfortable you are with the software you’re using. If your current software is doing the job just fine and you’re not facing any major issues, you might be tempted to stick with what you know. But if you want the latest tools and want to stay safe from cyber threats, embracing those upgrades could be worth the temporary hassle.  If you rely on it for work or sensitive tasks, staying up-to-date can save you a lot of trouble in the future. But if it’s for casual use, you might want to weigh the pros and cons before diving in. In the end, it’s all about finding that sweet spot between functionality and frustration!

I have a golden rule when it comes to upgrades.  Always back up your working system first.  If things go wrong, you can install the backup.  I'm amazed how many people don't have a regular backup routine and schedule.

A couple of update examples:

  • I always install any security updates to operating systems.  No questions asked.
  • For software, I take a more cautious approach.  I don't automatically update software just because I can, or it promises new features.  I wait a while, do the research, read user forums and reviews and ask myself if I really need the update.  Perhaps I do, but a lot of the time I don't.  I'm thinking here of Steinberg's Cubase Pro software (i).  I'm on version 14, but version 15 is out.  Version 15 offers new features, but as yet I'm uncertain if I need them.  I'm certainly not convinced.  What I don't use as a deciding factor is cost.
  • My antivirus software (F-Secure Total) (ii) updates itself.  Check that your antivirus software does.

I have software that I've stuck with for years, doing one thing well.  I don't need to upgrade.

So, updating software isn't as straightforward as it may seem.  It's for any user to decide based on need, cost, features etc.  Whatever you decide - backup your system first!
